FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT ARE LAB-GROWN GEMSTONES?
Lab-grown gemstones are real gemstones created in state-of-the-art laboratories, mirroring the chemical composition, brilliance, and durability of natural stones. Grown under carefully controlled conditions using advanced technology that replicates natural pressure and formation processes, these gemstones offer exceptional clarity and are visually indistinguishable from mined stones to the naked eye. This innovative approach allows for a broader range of cuts, colors, and distinctive stones in the pieces we offer at Dorsey.
Lab-Grown Sapphire
Lab-grown white sapphire is created in a laboratory under carefully controlled conditions to mirror the beauty and durability of natural gemstones. With the same chemical composition and hardness as natural sapphire, it delivers bright, colorless sparkle and remarkable clarity.
Moissanite
The new gemstone at Dorsey: Moissanite is a lab-grown stone coveted for its exceptional durability, brilliance (crisp sparkle), and fire (prismatic flashes). Natural moissanite is extremely rare; today, its use in jewelry is exclusively lab-grown. At Dorsey, our moissanite pieces are discreetly engraved with “MS” on the clasp, identifying each design as authentic moissanite.
Lab-Grown Diamond
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, created in a controlled laboratory environment to replicate the natural conditions under which diamonds form deep within the Earth. They share the same physical, chemical, and visual properties as mined diamonds, offering the same brilliance and durability, while being produced through a more environmentally conscious approach.
Nano Gemstones
Crafted in a laboratory through advanced crystal-growing processes, nano gemstones capture the beauty and brilliance of natural crystals while delivering perfectly uniform color in a wide range of vibrant shades.
WHAT IS DIAMOND EQUIVALENT WEIGHT (DEW)?
Diamond Equivalent Weight (DEW) shows how a gemstone’s size compares to a diamond of the same weight. Since different stones—like lab-grown white sapphire or moissanite—have varying densities, two gemstones with the same carat weight can appear different in size. DEW helps you understand the gemstone’s relative size at a glance.
ARE LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS CERTIFIED AT DORSEY?
At Dorsey, we offer certification for lab-grown diamonds 0.50 carats and over. Any qualifying diamond will come with a certificate verifying its quality, cut, and color. To see if the piece you’re interested in is certified, check the individual product’s details page.
If your piece is certified, it will be delivered with the corresponding certificate. Please note that for returns or refunds, certified pieces must include their certificate.
For lab-grown diamond Rivières and other pieces crafted with multiple small stones, individual certification isn’t provided. This is standard practice even for natural diamonds, as the stones are too small for individual grading. You can find details about the quality and color of each piece on the individual product’s detail page.
WHICH METALS DO YOU USE IN YOUR PIECES?
At Dorsey, our pieces are crafted exclusively in high-quality sterling silver, 18k gold vermeil, and 14k yellow and white gold, with coated brass used occasionally. Our choice of setting and craftsmanship is guided by the gemstones selected for each design.
Sterling Silver
Our sterling silver pieces are crafted from high-quality 925 sterling silver, a durable alloy made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals for added strength. Sterling silver offers a timeless, bright finish that’s perfect for everyday wear, combining elegance with long-lasting durability. At Dorsey, each sterling silver piece is coated in rhodium to enhance the silvery brightness of the metal and prevent tarnish. All sterling silver pieces are engraved with the identifying “925” mark, certifying its authenticity.
18k Gold Vermeil
At Dorsey, our 18k gold vermeil pieces are crafted by plating sterling silver with 2.5 microns of 18k gold. Vermeil is the highest-quality gold plating in jewelry. Thanks to its thicker gold layer, it’s durable, lasting, and ideal for everyday wear. At Dorsey, pieces crafted in 18k gold vermeil are engraved with the identifying marking of “925”, certifying its authenticity as sterling silver coated with 2.5 microns of 18k gold.
Every 18k gold vermeil piece we create undergoes a rigorous quality check to measure plating thickness and ensure it meets vermeil standards.
14k Gold
Our 14k gold pieces are crafted from high-quality 14k gold, an alloy made of 58.5% pure gold combined with other metals for added strength and durability. This gives a warm, luxurious glow while ensuring long-lasting wear for everyday use. At Dorsey, pieces crafted in 14k gold are engraved with the identifying marking of “14K”, certifying its authenticity.
Rhodium or 18k Gold Coated Brass
Our brass pieces are finished with a coating of 18k yellow gold or silvery white rhodium. Beyond their rich color, these high-quality finishes provide a brilliant, long-lasting shine while enhancing resistance to tarnish and everyday wear.
I HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN AND/OR ALLERGIES. IS DORSEY JEWELRY RIGHT FOR ME?
Most of our pieces are crafted in sterling silver, 18k gold vermeil, or 14k gold, which are generally well-tolerated by those with metal sensitivities. However, metal allergies vary from person to person, so we cannot guarantee that these materials will be suitable for everyone.
For earrings, any style with a post is made from 14k gold to help minimize allergic reactions and provide extended comfort with every wear.
If you’re unsure about the metal used in a particular piece, you can always check the individual product page of the style you’re eyeing for more information.

HOW DO I TAKE CARE OF MY JEWELRY?
Jewelry may naturally change with daily, extended wear, but regular cleaning, gentle handling, and proper storage in a dry, well-ventilated space will help to preserve its shine and longevity.
Caring For Metals & Finishes
Sterling silver, 18k gold vermeil, 14k gold, and gold or rhodium-coated brass can all be maintained using the same care routine.
Clean using warm water and gentle soap with a soft-bristled brush, avoiding harsh pressure.
Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately with a soft cloth, microfiber cloth, or paper towel.
As a precaution, we suggest removing sterling silver, coated, or plated pieces before showering or swimming. Apply lotions and perfumes before putting on your jewelry to avoid contact with chemicals that can cause damage.
Store pieces separately in a dry, well-ventilated space and away from chemicals to protect finishes and preserve lasting brilliance. Dorsey packaging is well-suited for gifting and travel, but not recommended for long-term jewelry storage.
Caring For Gemstones
Lab-grown gemstones are exceptionally durable, allowing a single, effortless approach to everyday cleaning and care.
Clean gently with warm water and mild soap using a soft-bristled brush, focusing on the underside of the stone settings to restore brilliance, or use an ultrasonic cleaner for securely set pieces.
Like metals, store each piece separately to prevent scratches and inspect their settings regularly to maintain quality and keep stones secure. Apply lotions and perfumes before putting on your jewelry to avoid contact with chemicals that can cause damage to the gemstones.

Clasp Issues
If a clasp feels stuck or hard to open, there’s a chance it isn’t being released properly. When removing your necklace or bracelet, gently press down on the clasp button—the small raised, ridged area at the top. Using the clasp as intended helps keep it working smoothly and prevents unnecessary damage.
If you’re struggling to remove your necklace on your own, we recommend asking someone else for help to avoid accidental damage to the clasp.
Necklace "Flipping"
Is your new Dorsey necklace flipping instead of laying flat against your neck? Most often, this happens if the strand is unintentionally clasped in a way that allows it to twist with movement. When putting on your necklace, make sure the longer, extended end of the clasp (often called the “tongue” of the clasp) is in your right hand. Here are a few tips to help keep your necklace lying flat:
Keep the strand straight. When putting on your necklace, avoid twisting it as you clasp it. Make sure the strand is fully straight and free of bends or curves that could cause it to twist or flip.
Lay the necklace flat. Hold the end of the strand firmly and use your thumb and index finger to gently straighten it from top to clasp, removing any twists or kinks. Once the strand is smooth, bring both ends around your neck in a “U” shape and secure the clasp.
Position it properly. If your necklace sits too close to your clothing’s neckline, it may not lay flat. Make sure the strand rests either above or below the neckline for the best fit and appearance.
Consider a different size. One size doesn’t fit all. If you’ve tried the tips above and your necklace still doesn’t lay properly, the length may be the issue. We recommend exchanging your piece for a different length. Visit our Returns & Exchanges page for more details.
If you have decided that the necklace you purchased still is not right for you, you are welcome to start a return via our Returns Center or contact Client Services for personalized assistance.
